The tradition of a brunch as a breakfast-lunch hybrid first appeared in the circles of aristocratic English youth. It was feasting after a hunt. The term “brunch”, formed from the two words “breakfast” and “lunch”, was coined by British writer Guy Beringer.

In 1895 he wrote a publication in Hunter’s Weekly about the benefits of brunch and compared it to the typical British post-church early dinner. One year later the new term was even included in the New Oxford Item. 

From England, the tradition of a long Sunday feast with both sweet and savory items after an early breakfast migrated to the United States. There the local elite, the Hollywood stars immediately caught up with this great idea. Celebrity boosters were making their way across the country on trains and stopped to enjoy late-morning meals in restaurants.

Brunch became the popular version of late breakfast in the 1930s. It was a great opportunity to enjoy delicious dishes without rushing after nighttime fun. 

Plus, brunch involved inviting guests, who in this case were recent colleagues from the night’s adventures. Later brunch became a family tradition. It became common to organize such wholesome meals from 11.00 to 16.00 on Sundays. After the 1950s restaurants and hotels started serving brunch meals with morning cocktails.

Interestingly, the tradition of brunch was important for the female major movement of progress. A full-course brunch meal served at the restaurants was a great opportunity for family women to take a break from cooking. Movies and series like Sex in the City also contributed to the popularity of rising brunch culture.

Drinks
